You might be thinking—What? Where have you been this week? 🤔

Yes, I have been here, and I’ve been reading the same texts as everyone else.

But I’ve just come out of our Be Human Rights Confident Collective convening—where so many of you joined us on Zoom—and I feel energized, inspired, and grateful.

We know what it takes to move the needle on human rights due diligence—in a way that is meaningful, pragmatic, and reduces burden. This is our moment. While we may all have slightly different views on the details, and that’s absolutely natural, we are united in pushing forward.

💡 It reminds me of a quote I once saw in a bookstore in New York. (Yes, I have an obsession with stationery and you will find me browsing the stationery aisle in every bookshop the minute I can 🖊️📖). I copy-paste it below.

🌍 We are a strong community.

We have the UN Guiding Principles. These, along with the OECD Guidelines, set global expectations, endorsed at the UN level. EU institutions can’t undo them. They’re here to stay.

We have investors. As one investor on LinkedIn put it: For the avoidance of doubt, we expect companies to respect human rights per the UNGPs—and we will vote against Boards who don’t meet these expectations.

We have laws. Just look at the surge in legislation over the past decade requiring human rights due diligence.

📢 Next step: Read the proposed EU CSDDD text and tell us—and others—what you think. We need practitioners at the table.

I got a flurry of messages on Wednesday from practitioners, all asking: Who is drafting this text and have any of them been anywhere near due diligence?

It’s on us to be purposeful and strong. What works? What’s meaningful? Where can we compromise—and where must we hold the line?
